Car accidents are notorious for stirring curiosity. Most of us can’t not look. What happened? Is everyone ok? Did you see that?! Now, with the introduction of dash cams that record every trip, people are catching the craziest things on camera. From insane crashes to incredible natural events, some are hilarious and others are devastating. The main thing they have in common is that we can’t look away. Here are 10 of the craziest incidents caught on a dash cam.
Ever Seen a Meteor Strike?
On February 15, 2013, the Chelyabinsk meteor struck Russia and this dash cam captured the footage. The meteor weighed 13 tons and was traveling at 40,400 mph before it exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk. Simultaneously awe-inspiring and terrifying, you almost have to see it to believe it.
An Emergency Landing
In an amazing feat of superior piloting, this plane made an emergency landing on a busy highway in Clearwater, Florida. The landing was captured by the Pinellas Country Sheriff’s dash cam who happened to be in the right place at the right time to assist. Incredibly, no one was harmed.
New Take on "Going for a Spin"
Driving on icy roads is always tricky. This red Jeep Grand Cherokee went for a little spin on wintery roads after changing lanes and hitting a patch of ice. Thankfully, the driver was able to regain control, but not before the car did some sweet dance moves!
Apparently Tanks Have Right of Way
In a hilariously nonchalant way, this Russian military tank crosses the road out of nowhere, only to disappear into the countryside. The driver politely stops, allows it to pass, and continues on their way as if nothing happened.
Crazy Rally Car Crash
In this incredible dash cam footage, you see a rally car driver lose control. The camera gets ejected from the car and, in slow motion, you see the car do a crazy flip overhead. We’re not sure of the final outcome of this extreme dash cam footage, but it’s one of those rare angles we typically only see in action films.
Lightning Never Strikes the Same Spot Twice
According to National Geographic, the odds of getting struck by lightning in your lifetime are 1 in 3,000. This dash cam captured one of those unique moments when lightning struck a moving vehicle during a storm. It seems that the driver of the stricken car keeps going, so hopefully, that means everyone was ok. Lightning only causes death about 10 percent of the time. It’s likely that the car itself saved the people inside from any permanent harm. Still, how crazy is that?!
Taking Cars to New Heights
Reckless driving is nothing new and you’ve likely seen one too many dash cam compilations of crazy drivers. But what you’ve probably never seen is a car so out of control that it flies through the air and crashes into the second story of a building.
Sure enough, this dash cam captured just that, as the owner luckily passed under the wreckage to safety. We’re not so sure what happened after the crash but it definitely wasn’t good.
Don’t Drink and Drive
It goes without saying that drinking and driving is a definite no-no. You’re putting your life and the lives of others in extreme danger when you do. But this guy takes drunk driving to a whole new level. We at least assume he was drunk… Having the time of his life on a shopping cart in the middle of a busy highway, this man seems to have no fear. Spinning in front of oncoming traffic seems like the most fun this man has had in ages. Let’s just hope someone was able to take away his cart and bring him some water.
Japan’s 2011 Tsunami
As we make our way toward the end of our list, this is one of those “can’t look away” dash cam videos. Captured during the devastating tsunami that ravaged Japan in 2011, this footage is far from humorous. Over 20,000 lives were lost during this natural disaster and there’s really nothing like seeing it in real-time. This video shows a wall of water, cars, and debris come crashing through buildings like something straight out of a movie. Unfortunately, this crazy dash cam footage is all too real.
A Good Reason to Have a Dash Cam
This bizarre video is one of the main reasons having a dash cam is a smart idea. This man clearly fakes being hit, perhaps hoping to be paid by an insurance claim. Although this might not happen often, it’s worth it to protect yourself from insurance fraud. If you’ve been in a car accident, you’ll know how tough it can be to figure out what actually happened. Our perception of an incident might be skewed without even realizing it. But with a dash cam, we can help the police and insurance companies understand what happened and who is eligible to receive an insurance claim. From fraud prevention to crazy road trip mishaps, you can capture it all with your own dash cam. Police departments all across the country have enabled dash cams for officers to better protect the public and themselves. In some instances, there has been unnecessary police brutality during what should have been a simple interaction with a citizen.
Although dash cams can’t completely solve the problem of police accountability, it’s a fantastic start. By getting objective footage of what happens during a police encounter, dash cams can help authorities get to the bottom of what actually happened if something goes awry.
Catch Thieves and Vandals
Dash cams can also be used as your car’s own personal security system. If you purchase a dash cam that comes with a 24-hour parking monitor, you can rest assured that your vehicle will be protected.
Whether you want to check in on some faulty repairs after dropping off your car at the mechanic or you’re trying to find whoever smashed your passenger seat window last night, a dash cam can get all the footage you need to figure out what happened.
Overall Safety and Security
When it comes down to it, dash cams provide drivers and passengers with safety, security, and overall peace of mind. Knowing that the dash cam is recording everything, from the trip to what happens in the parking lot, means knowing that you’re covered if anything to goes wrong.
Especially for worried parents and world travelers, a dash cam can make all the difference.
Unexpectedly Useful Features
Finally, the last reason to own a dash cam is for all of its unexpectedly useful features. Although you may have only just now learned about all the incredible benefits of getting a dash cam for your car, the tipping point might not come until we get into the specifics.
Features like 360-degree swivel action, an HD display, and Wi-Fi-enabled functioning are common in base models with more exclusive features like night vision and auto-recording available as you move up the range. These features are truly hard to beat.
